KBIA
Legislative Day Set
Kansas Building Industry Association will
host Legislative Day on Tuesday, September 28th, at the Maner
Conference Center in Topeka. This is an annual event where
HBA members from across the state meet with their legislative
delegation to discuss issues in the forthcoming session that
relate to the building industry. Speaker of the Kansas House,
Representative Doug Mays, will be the guest speaker after
a luncheon. It should be a very interesting program!
KBIA Executive Director Janet Stubbs spoke at the January
LHBA meeting and shared some thoughts about the issues that
she anticipates during this legislative session. There have
been 65 bills already introduced asking for the removal of
sales tax exemptions on various sales including a significant
exemption that affects construction. KBIA plans to counter
the proposal for removal of this particular exemption by submitting
an economic model that shows construction helps stimulate
the economy above and beyond the amount of sales tax revenue
exempted. There is also a movement to establish a Kansas OSHA.
KBIA opposes this notion because it simply creates another
level of bureaucracy. Finally, there is a bill being introduced
by the KBIA called the "Right to Repair" which will
force a homeowner to provide the builder an opportunity to
respond/repair before they can file a lawsuit.
Anyone who would like to be a part of the Lawrence Home Builders
Association's group that will attend Legislative Day is invited
to attend. It is great opportunity to learn more about the
state issues and visit with the Lawrence Legislative Delegation.
